Breath is written to draw attention to the lyricism of the soprano saxophone, its closeness to the human voice, and its ability to ‘sing’. The saxophone part therefore needs to be played with as pure a tone as possible, and the saxophonist has considerable expressive leeway. The piano part, by contrast, provides the foundation; the chords in the piano should be played with simplicity and modesty.
